Feature reference
Need to check what a button does, where it appears, or whether it is on by default? Start here. Step-by-step walkthroughs live in the manual.
Reader
The ChatGPT page is good for chatting. It is not always good for reading one dense answer. Reader gives that answer its own calmer surface, then lets you return.
| Feature | Where to open | Default / state | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Reader | Message toolbar -> Reader | Toolbar action | Open the current answer in Reader. Long paragraphs, code, tables, and formulas are easier to read there. |
| Markdown rendering and cleanup | Reader body | Automatic | Headings, lists, tables, code blocks, and formulas are preserved where possible. Unsafe HTML is removed. |
| Heading outline | Settings -> Reader -> Show Heading Outline | On by default | When an answer has several headings, Reader shows a small outline. |
| Outline jump and active heading | Reader outline rail | Shown when multiple headings exist | Jump to a heading and keep track of the current section while scrolling. |
| Render code blocks | Settings -> Reader -> Render Code Blocks | On by default | Code answers render as code blocks. Turn it off when you want a lighter Reader. |
| Code block copy | Reader code block button | Shown inside code blocks | Copy a code block directly instead of selecting it from the full answer. |
| Pagination and arrow keys | Reader footer | Automatic | Move through answers one page at a time instead of turning the Reader into one endless scroll. |
| Fullscreen reading | Reader header -> fullscreen button | Reader action | Use it when the answer is long and you want the surrounding ChatGPT page out of the way. |
| Reader content width | Advanced Settings -> Reader content width | 1000px default, adjustable 480-1600px | Widen it on a large display, narrow it when you want tighter reading. |
| Locate source message | Reader footer locate action | Reader action | Return to the original ChatGPT message after reading, then copy, annotate, or ask a follow-up. |
| Send from Reader | Reader footer -> Send | Reader action | Send a follow-up or prepared annotation text back to the ChatGPT composer. |
| Sticky temporary excerpts | Reader selection -> Stick | Kept for the page lifetime | Pin a few passages beside the Reader while you compare them. They clear after refresh. |
| Sticky panel organization | Reader left Sticky panel | Collapsible, deletable, draggable | Build a temporary working set while reading, then decide what to save, copy, or ask about. |
Copy and formulas
Copying should keep usable source: Markdown, LaTeX, and content blocks that do not break halfway.
| Feature | Where to open | Default / state | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy current message Markdown | Message toolbar -> Copy Markdown | Toolbar action | Copy the current answer, not the whole page or the last visible message by accident. |
| Copy current message as PNG | Hover action on Copy Markdown | Shown when browser policy allows | Turn one answer into an image when that is easier to share. |
| Copy current Reader page | Reader -> Copy | Reader action | Copy the current Reader page using the same content rules as toolbar copy. |
| Source-aware Reader selection | Reader body selection + Cmd/Ctrl+C | Reader selection action | Select only what you need. Formulas, code blocks, tables, and images are copied as closed source units where possible. |
| Formula click copies Markdown | Click a formula; configurable in Settings | On by default | Click a formula and get its LaTeX / Markdown source without digging through the rendered output. |
| Formula hover actions | Hover a formula after enabling actions in Settings | All off by default | Enable PNG, SVG, or MathML copy/save only when you need those assets. |
Annotations and follow-up
When one sentence needs a note or follow-up, write next to the source text. Later, turn those notes into a prompt.
| Feature | Where to open | Default / state | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add annotation | Reader selection -> Annotate | Reader selection action | Comment on the selected sentence or paragraph without describing its location in another document. |
| Edit / delete annotation | Reader gutter anchor or annotation popover | Kept for the page lifetime | Revise notes while reading. They are temporary and clear after a full refresh. |
| Copy annotations | Reader header -> Copy annotations | Available when annotations exist | Build a numbered list from the source snippets and your notes. |
| Insert annotations | Reader send popover -> Insert annotations | Available when annotations exist | Place prepared annotations into the send box and skip a copy-paste step. |
| User prompts | Settings -> Reader -> User prompts | Three starter prompts included | Save common revision instructions, such as editing point by point. |
| Annotations copy template | Settings -> Reader -> Annotations copy template | Default template includes selected source and user annotation tokens | Decide the format used when annotations are copied. |
| Prompt position | Settings -> Reader -> Place prompt below annotations | Prompt on top by default | Put the prompt before or after the annotation list. |
Bookmarks and saved material
Some answers are not needed right now, but you know you will look for them later. Bookmarks save the content and the way back.
| Feature | Where to open | Default / state | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save / remove bookmark | Message toolbar or Reader header -> Bookmark | Toolbar action | Save an important answer and the location needed to return to it. |
| Save dialog and folders | When saving a bookmark | Available | Name a bookmark and place it in a folder for a project, topic, or writing task. |
| Search and sort | Bookmarks panel | Sort by time or A-Z | Find saved material by query, time, or alphabetic order. |
| Bookmark preview | Click a bookmark row | Uses Reader | Preview saved content in the panel before jumping back to the source page. |
| Go / Copy / Delete | Bookmark row actions | Available | Jump to the source, copy content, or remove an old bookmark from the same row. |
| Bulk delete, move, export | After selecting bookmarks in the panel | Available | Clean up multiple bookmarks at once, useful when a project wraps up. |
| Import / export backup | Bookmarks panel or Data & Storage | JSON file | Export a copy before reinstalling the browser, switching devices, or making big changes. |
| Context-only save | Settings -> Toolbar & Page Actions | Off by default, keeps 500 chars | Turn it on to save storage. Previews are shorter, but source-page navigation still works. |
Export and sharing
When an answer needs to go into notes, a project archive, or someone else's inbox, export it.
| Feature | Where to open | Default / state | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save Messages | Message toolbar -> Export / Save as | Shown by default | Open the export dialog at the current answer, then select more messages if needed. |
| Markdown export | Save Messages -> Markdown | Available | Use it for notes, repositories, documents, or any workflow where editing continues. |
| PDF export | Save Messages -> PDF | Browser print flow | Useful for a finished handoff, archived long answers, or preserving a readable layout. |
| PNG / ZIP export | Save Messages -> PNG | Single item as PNG, multiple items as ZIP | Share one answer as an image, or package several answers as a ZIP. |
| PNG image width | Settings -> Toolbar & Page Actions | Desktop 800px default; mobile 390, tablet 640, custom 360-1200 | Set width for the destination: mobile screenshots, desktop docs, and web assets do not need the same size. |
| PNG image scale | Settings -> Toolbar & Page Actions | 1x default, adjustable 1x-3x | Raise the scale for sharper output; very long exports may be capped for stability. |
| Deep Research cleanup | Markdown / export pipeline | Automatic | When exporting Deep Research content, the pipeline trims avoidable noise. |

That path covers the usual job: read the answer properly, then move the useful part where it belongs.
